Look around your neighborhood. Pick any three houses. Statistically, one of them is behind on their electric or gas bill right now. Not because the people inside are irresponsible. Because the bill keeps going up and the paycheck does not.

Nearly one in three Rhode Island Energy gas customers is currently delinquent. Around one in six is more than 90 days behind. Three years ago those numbers looked nothing like this. Something changed. And it was not the neighbors.

The Bill Is Not Supposed to Work This Way

Your electric bill is not like your mortgage or your car payment. Those are fixed. You know what you owe, you budget for it, and barring something dramatic, it stays the same.

Your electric bill is different. Your energy company sets the rate. State regulators approve it. Global energy markets influence it. Weather drives usage up or down. And none of those forces are working in your favor.

Last winter, Rhode Island regulators approved a rate hike that raised the average customer’s bill by about 23% compared to summer rates, adding roughly $31 a month to what people were already paying. The previous winter was even higher. And just before Thanksgiving 2025, Rhode Island Energy quietly filed paperwork for the next round of increases, set to kick in September 2026.

It never stops. That is not an accident. It is the nature of a system you do not control. And to be fair, it is not because the electric company is greedy. It is because there are far too many variable components in that supply chain, and every one of them can drive your bill higher. That is exactly what you want to gain control over. Your power. Here is something most people do not realize. When your energy company wants to upgrade infrastructure, install smart meters, expand transmission lines, or fund renewable energy programs, they do not absorb that cost. They pass it to you, automatically, through your monthly bill.
