I spent nearly a decade at IBM Security building cybersecurity products, working with large teams whose entire job was understanding how sophisticated attackers think and where critical systems are vulnerable. What that experience taught me is that the most dangerous threats are the ones most people don’t know to worry about. This is one of them.

The American electrical grid is a soft target. And the people who would like to use that against us already know it.

This Is Not a Future Threat

Foreign governments, and the U.S. government has confirmed this publicly, are actively probing and mapping our electrical grid right now. Not planning to someday. Right now. Military and intelligence officials do not debate whether a serious attack on grid infrastructure will happen. They debate when, and how bad.

Most people hear that and file it away next to other big abstract threats that never seem to actually arrive. This one is different. Here is why.

The grid was built to move electricity, not to defend itself. It was designed decades ago, long before anyone imagined that a person sitting at a laptop on the other side of the world could send a command that flips a switch in a substation in Rhode Island. The same design that makes it work is what makes it vulnerable.

You do not have to blow up a power plant to take down a city. You just have to find the right door and send the right signal. And the grid has a lot of doors.

The Generator Story

When I understood this clearly, I did what a lot of prepared homeowners do. I bought a serious backup power solution: a 22kW whole-home generator, professionally installed, wired directly into my house. I felt ready.

Then I thought it through one more step.

That generator runs on natural gas. And natural gas does not flow on its own. It moves through pipelines because compressor stations keep it pressurized and moving. Those compressor stations run on electricity. In a serious grid-down event, whether from a storm, equipment failure, or a cyberattack, natural gas pressure begins to degrade within hours. Within a day or two, residential lines go dry.

I thought about converting it to propane. At least with propane you have a tank on your property, not a pipeline you depend on. But a tank runs out. And when the grid is down and everyone around you is in the same situation, propane supply dries up fast. You are back to depending on a supply chain to bail you out of a supply chain failure.

My expensive backup power plan had a hidden dependency on the exact thing it was supposed to replace. No matter how I looked at it, I was still renting my resilience from someone else.

The Only Defense That Actually Works
