The Math Nobody Shows You

Part four of four in the series: THE SUN DOESN’T NEGOTIATE. YOUR POWER. YOUR RULES.: A four-part series on energy independence. Why it matters, what threatens it, and how owning your own power changes everything.

Over the past three posts we talked about supply chains, cyber attacks, and bills that never stop climbing. This post is about the math.

The Bill You Never Add Up

Most people think about their electric bill one month at a time. That is exactly how the utility company prefers it.

The average Rhode Island household spends $150 to $200 a month on electricity today, before the rate increases already approved for 2026. Over twenty years that is $36,000 to $50,000, and that assumes rates stay flat. History tells us they will not.

That money is gone. No equity. No asset. No return.

The Other Side of the Ledger

A ContainerSolutions Core40 is priced at $117,000, with an all-in investment of approximately $150,000 including site preparation, foundation, and utility connections.

That purchase includes a complete solar array, battery storage, and hybrid inverter, standard. Not amenities. Your own private power plant.

The federal 30% investment tax credit applies directly to the energy components, dollar for dollar off your tax liability. Rhode Island and Massachusetts both offer additional incentive programs that can pay you for the energy your system produces and the grid services your battery provides. The specifics depend on your situation. We do not publish a one size fits all figure because your number is yours.

What we will say: the incentive landscape meaningfully changes the equation. The price you see is not the net cost you pay.

Stay Connected. For Good Reason.

We recommend keeping your grid connection, and yes, there is a small fixed monthly charge for that. It is worth it for two reasons.

First, it gives you backup power for extended stretches of heavy cloud cover or unusually high demand. Second, and this is the part most people do not know, being grid connected is what qualifies you for the energy incentive programs that can pay you for the solar energy your system produces and the grid services your battery provides. You need to be on the grid to get paid by it.

That small monthly connection fee will more than likely be far offset by what those programs put back in your pocket.

Two Futures

Stay on the grid: keep paying a bill that will be higher next year, and the year after. Over twenty years, tens of thousands of dollars spent with nothing to show for it.

Own a ContainerSolutions home: your ongoing energy cost for everything the sun provides is zero. Every year the utility rate goes up, you feel nothing. One path is a subscription that never ends. The other is an asset you own outright.

Let’s Do Your Math

No pressure. No promises. Just a conversation about what the numbers look like for your specific situation.

If you have read this far, you already know the grid is not the safe, stable, affordable option it used to feel like. We would love to talk about what comes next.
